When new affiliate marketers are seeking information about SEO, they are basically asking, how does Google work?

Yes, there are other search engines that exist besides Google. However, Google has a MAJOR market share in the search engine World with Yahoo! and Bing far behind. In fact, Google also owns YouTube, the #2 search engine in the world. I don’t know of anyone who optimizes their website to rank well in Bing. SEO is all Google.

By the way, if you’re not sure what I mean when I say “SEO”, check out my page answering the question, what is SEO?

How Does Google Work?

How Does Google Work?

As you dive further into affiliate marketing and search engine optimization, you will see people on various blogs and forums talking about the Google algorithm. An algorithm is basically a set of rules that dictate which websites rank highly and which don’t.

For example, if a website contains a lot of spammy links and advertisements without much quality content, this would tell the Google algorithm that your site is probably low quality and so, it won’t rank very highly. If, on the other hand, you have a page with a ton of great content and maybe a few relevant advertisements from reputable places mixed in, Google will form a bit of trust with you and rank your site a bit higher.

That said, there are reported to be over 200 different factors that go into ranking a website and the exact “ingredients” that go into this algorithm are kept secret – just like Coca-Cola keeps their exact ingredients secret. To make things even more confusing, there are about 400 changes made to the algorithm each year. That means, the Google algorithm is changing every day!

How Does Google Work?

The Ultimate Goal For Google

In order to understand how Google works, we first need to look at what Google is trying to accomplish. Many affiliate marketers seemingly believe Google is there to work for them and grow their business for free. While I’m sure as a company, Google is happy to help other businesses succeed, this is a secondary objective. Their main objective is to provide the best possible experience for people doing searches.

If Google helps people find what they are searching for by displaying relevant, helpful, and informative web pages, those people will continue coming back to use Google for additional searches. This, in turn, keeps them as the industry leader which means they can continue making their billions of dollars every year by charging advertising fees from advertisers.

On the other hand, if Google provided a poor user experience by listing spammy and low quality websites, those using Google search would find an alternative way to find information online, probably by using competing search engines like Yahoo! and Bing.

So, the main objective for Google is to provide the best possible experience for people SEARCHING for information, not necessarily for affiliate marketers like you and me.

How To Make Google LOVE You

As stated above, Google’s main objective is to return high quality search results. That means, in order for Google to love you, it is imperative that your site is high quality. Sorry, no short cuts here. You MUST create quality content if you wish to have a stable and long-term business online.

Don’t worry! This doesn’t mean you have to be some sort of expert programmer or have advanced knowledge about search engines. In fact, trying to develop your website to make Google happy is the wrong way to go. All you have to do is provide information about a topic you already know and love. Put as much passion into it as you can and make sure when people land on your site, they are overwhelmed with the quality info you are providing (just like I hope I’m doing for you with this website).

So, to make Google love you, don’t focus on Google at all. Focus on creating a phenomenal user experience and everything else will happen naturally. Not only will you rank highly in Google, but you will rank highly in other search engines, plus your site visitors will be happy to share you site with friends, on social media, link to you in forums, and help you grow your business because you are providing great value to others!
