Once I knew that I was going to running my own legitimate online business, I knew this meant I was going to have to do a lot of research into who I would have host my web properties. I’d already decided that WordPress was going to be the most flexible solution for me to use to actually create my website, but that still left the question of hosting. There were a lot of options out there, such as BlueHost, WPengine, and also DreamHost WordPress hosting. But which one was the right one?

I’m going to be looking at DreamHost WordPress hosting here. I want to talk about what they offer, how that affects people that use WordPress and ultimately whether it’s a good or a bad service to go with. There are plenty of other services out there all competing to host your website, so how does DreamHost WordPress hosting stack up?

DreamHost WordPress Hosting Is Legit

For people who are concerned about safety or legitimacy, I’m going to get this out of the way right now. DreamHost WordPress hosting is a completely safe, completely legal, and completely legit service. In fact, when it comes to website hosting services, DreamHost WordPress hosting is actually one of the oldest and most well-known. This company is a “classic” Silicon Valley story, having started in California, in the 1990s, at the “dawn” of the Internet, so they’ve seen it all, and been around practically since the prehistoric era of the information age.

This means that if you go looking for reviews or confirmation that DreamHost WordPress hosting is a legitimate company, with an experienced history, and online reviews written by actual users, don’t be too surprised if you end up spending a long time looking at information. In many cases, reviews and knowledge of DreamHost WordPress hosting go back further than most of the technology you’re using now to browse the web!

DreamHost WordPress Hosting Uptime

dreamhost-wordpress-hosting-reviewOne of the biggest things people should look at when it comes to any WordPress hosting service is a quality known as “uptime,” which essentially reflects how reliable that service is at keeping your website online. This means that when people actually go looking for your website, they’ll find it at the appropriate server address, rather than getting messages about being unable to connect, or “website unavailable.” DreamHost WordPress hosting, I am happy to say, is incredibly reliable in this regard with over a 99% uptime. If it’s uptime that’s one of your biggest priorities, DreamHost WordPress hosting has a lot of confidence in their system.

DreamHost WordPress hosting is so sure that their system will provide good uptime that they have a very impressive guarantee in place. If you experience any downtime with their service, they will credit you with a full day of free hosting service for every hour that your website was down. For the vast majority of their customers, this is a guarantee that DreamHost WordPress hosting has not had to deliver on since their uptime usually verges on 99+%.

My Preferred Alternative To DreamHost WordPress Hosting

While DreamHost WordPress hosting manages to deliver in important areas like being legitimate, respected and reliable, that’s not the whole story. In many cases, that’s actually just the ground floor of evaluating a web hosting service, because there are many other factors you need to take into account. That’s one reason why I’m going to propose WPengine as an alternative. But first, we’ve seen the good in DreamHost WordPress hosting, now let’s look at some of the issues.

For people on a budget, DreamHost WordPress hosting is not the cheapest service around. In fact, probably due to their reputation and seniority within the industry, they’re actually more of a premium service. For example, their cheapest service, is a contract. It’s only $7.95 a month, but only if you lock yourself in to three years of the service, so in reality, you’re paying over $280 for their cheapest plan.

If you’re looking for options when it comes to shared hosting, don’t go to DreamHost WordPress hosting. Unlike many other companies, which will offer different tiers for shared hosting so you can find a plan works for you, DreamHost WordPress hosting has only one. That might be hard to swallow, especially if you’re just starting out and don’t need all the bells and whistles of a website owner that’s running a bigger business and needs more features and functionality. You’re going to get it and pay for it, whether you like it or not.

How WPengine Differs

I like WPengine and I frequently point others in the direction of this particular service for a lot of reasons. Like DreamHost WordPress hosting, this is a company that is legitimate, has the track record and the reputation. Do your research and you’ll find that the company has both the customers and the reviews to back up that it is doing honest business.

In addition to this, however, WPengine has some excellent uptime as well, meaning that it’s quite reliable. But it’s also not as expensive as DreamHost WordPress hosting. Like DreamHost, it has one area of focus is on WordPress hosting and provides a lot of support for people who want it, but they don’t charge the highest tier of prices for it.

They also give you more choice. DreamHost WordPress hosting has that one shared host plan, whereas WPengine has different tiers of plans for people who want them, as well as alternative plans that let you pay on a monthly basis if you like, or longer terms if that’s what you prefer.

However, what I really like about WPengine over DreamHost WordPress hosting is their security and support. DreamHost WordPress hosting can be quite uneven when it comes to technical support, with some real horror stories when things go wrong, especially if it’s not your fault, such as with spam bots or hacks. On the other hand, WPengine is extremely secure, always updating their security protocols and monitoring a situation. Best of all, in the event that you get hacked, all you have to do is tell them, and they will deal with the situation for free. They don’t abandon you and force you to hire someone else to restore control of your website to you. I really like the sense of responsibility they have with regards to their customers.
