Why Amazon Associates Can Be Totally Worth It

I’m about to share a little secret with you about the Amazon Associates affiliate program. Just about any seasoned affiliate marketer will complain about the low commissions that are offered in the Amazon Associates affiliate program. Heck, I’m one of them! But what is the reasoning behind the low commission payouts, which starts at just 6.5% or even lower depending on the products you’re attempting to sell? Why do they only allow a 24hr window for your referrals to make a purchase?

Here’s the secret. The awesome thing about the Amazon Associates affiliate program is you get a commission on ANYTHING your referral purchases in that 24hr window. So, let’s say you’re promoting high end digital cameras. A large percentage of your referral traffic won’t purchase a camera, but that doesn’t mean you won’t earn a commission off of them.

Amazon is extremely good at converting traffic. From simple 1-touch ordering to displaying highly targeted ads and products the individual may be interested in based on past purchases and shopping behaviors. I call this the “oh yeah!” referral, as in, “oh yeah! I forgot I need to get this other thing.”

You see, it doesn’t really matter if you are referring people to purchase a 99 cent e-book or a $2,000 digital camera. As long as you get enough people “in the door” so to speak, a certain number of them will at least purchase SOMETHING.

My Real World Example

I often talk about my site DogFoodInsider.com. The VAST majority of my Amazon Associates referral traffic comes from that website. People will read a dog food review page, click a link to Amazon, and a certain percentage DO make a purchase. What’s interesting, though, is that dog food doesn’t even comprise of half of my earnings through the Amazon Associates affiliate program.

I decided I would share a list of some recent sales I’ve had on Amazon. Remember, almost all of this traffic was referred to specific dog food sales pages. And yet, check out the diversity of items on this list. I know this is a long list, but I wanted to give you guys a good idea of what I’m talking about.

What Is The Lesson Here?

Wow! I told you that was a big list. Fortunately for me, I earned a commission on all that stuff. So what can be learned here?

Most seasoned affiliate marketers will tell you to focus on high ticket items if you build an Amazon Associates themed site. This isn’t necessarily bad advice, but it appears it is far less important than it is made out to be. As I stated earlier, almost ALL of my referrals (90%+) come directly from my dog food review pages on DogFoodInsider.com, and yet look at all the stuff I got credit for that isn’t even closely related to dog food.

By looking at this list, we can also start to get a good idea of why the Amazon Associates affiliate program pays such low commissions. I’m getting credit for items that I had nothing to do with, other than the fact I sent the referral at the right time. I basically get credit just for sending them “through the door.”

Amazon Associates Gets A Bad Wrap

While the Amazon Associates affiliate program is still very popular, it is common to read about people complaining due to the low commission percentages. I’ll come right out and say it – the Amazon Associates affiliate program isn’t even close to being my highest paying affiliate partner. With that said, I do like using the Amazon Associates affiliate program because it enables me to promote physical products on an e-commerce site everyone already knows about (trust isn’t a factor) and once I get people in the virtual door, Amazon is very, very, very, very good at closing the deal for me. Even if it’s a small percentage, there is a lot of value that Amazon brings to the table.

Some Final Thoughts

I hope this real-world example will help some of you who may be considering starting an Amazon Associates affiliate site. Whether you’re promoting high ticket items or not, you can still make sales on just about anything sold on Amazon. The lesson here is to just get people onto Amazon using your affiliate link, then let Amazon do the rest.
