It’s certainly an industry that’s rife with all sorts of possibilities, one you can easily tap into even as a beginner.

Possibly hundreds of times a day to get the maximum possible earning.
For example, let’s say you’ve applied to be an affiliate partner for Amazon Associates, one of the most famous programs out there.

Once you’re in, you will receive a unique link that will allow Amazon to track your audience and know if they purchase anything through you.

What’s the fuss about affiliate marketing, you ask?
Well, it’s only one of the easiest side hustles to start as an absolute beginner.
Done right, you will have a profitable side hustle for the rest of your life.
There are a number of benefits to trying affiliate marketing including the fact that it’s:
- Low-cost and low-risk
- Great for passive income
- Lets you work anywhere
Low-cost and low-risk
You can start your affiliate marketing career with almost no money.
Unlike being an entrepreneur and shelling out cash for production or putting up brick-and-mortar stores, the affiliate marketer can get away without paying much.
That’s because you don’t make your own products, you market already existing ones.
Although you do have to pay for the cost of running a website (more on that later!), that won’t put a hole in your pocket.
You could purchase a domain for about $10 a year and subscribe to a website hosting starting at $2.95 per month.
Add those up and you’ll get around $45, not a bad amount to spend upfront.
In some cases, you don’t even need a website!
And since you will hardly spend on anything, affiliate marketing is also a low-risk venture.

But you have to remember one thing: This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme.

Some affiliate programs, like the aforementioned Amazon Associates, could get you anywhere from 1% to 20% commission per sale.

But what’s the industry average earning?
According to Glassdoor, affiliate marketers earn an average of $56,255 per year.
That could even go up to $120k annually.

So how do you actually get started with affiliate marketing as a beginner?
I’ve divided this into five steps:
- Picking a niche
- Choosing a platform
- Finding an affiliate marketing program
- Creating high-quality content
- Driving traffic to your site
Let’s take a closer look!
Step 1: Pick a niche
In affiliate marketing, the fastest way to get anywhere is to focus on a specific niche and to know it inside out.
A niche is a smaller segment of an already existing larger market.
Focusing on a niche narrows your options in determining which products and services to promote.
For example, say you’re interested in fashion, a huge market with lots of subsets and segments.
You could zero in on niche markets for plus-size fashion, winter wear, designer shoes, and so on.
Instead of blindly recommending all sorts of fashion-related products — and there are a lot — with a niche, you get to dig deep into what your market truly needs.

Another example could be the pet niche.
Picking the pet niche gives you options for promoting products like dog food, cat litter, and pet training programs.
But what are the other best niches to explore?
The top ten most profitable affiliate marketing niches right now are:
- Home Decor
- Health and wellness
However, don’t keep yourself boxed within these options.
There are literally hundreds of niches out there that you’re free to explore!
So how do you decide on one?
Here are three steps to help you out.
How to pick a niche: Choose something you love
For starters, you could ask yourself a few questions:
- What are you passionate about?
- What do you want to learn more about?
- What problems do you want to solve?
- Who is your dream client?
- Is there a market for this niche?
Guide questions like these can make it easier to pick a niche you’ll enjoy in the long run.
Take your time to mull your options over!
Because I mean it when I say don’t underestimate finding a niche you’ll truly enjoy.
An affiliate marketing business needs a lot of time, effort, and commitment before you could achieve the coveted five or six-figure income.
Do you really want to be working hard for something you’re not passionate about?
How to pick a niche: Find a dream partner and build a website around them
Which brand are you simply dying to work with?
Do they have an affiliate marketing program?
If they do, you could start building a whole website around them.
Let’s say you’ve always been a fan of Nike, one of the world’s largest athletic apparel companies.
They sell the best footwear, workout gear, apparel, equipment, and more.
What do they stand for?
Sports and fitness.
And that’s the niche you should be aiming for.
Build a website that’s all about sports and fitness and start driving up the traffic with helpful posts.
Once you’ve established yourself as an authority on a niche that you love, you can apply as an affiliate partner.

And if everything goes well, not only have you achieved your dream of working with your favorite brand, but you’re also earning bucks from it.
How to pick a niche: Find a high search volume/low competition niche
To be honest, the affiliate marketing landscape in 2023 is waaay different from what it was in 2011, when I first started.
Back then, all you had to do was make sure to pack links in your article and wait for commissions to roll in.
Today, it’s more challenging.
The name of the game is data and high-quality content.
Try typing a keyword on Google and you’ll get a ton of quality content that’s quite a challenge to beat.
But this is a great warning for all beginner affiliate marketers out there: Don’t just dive into any niche and expect commissions in six months.
You need to study data.
Is a niche too saturated?
Can you top the searches with this keyword?
Later, we’ll talk more about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how it will immensely help drive traffic to your site.
But for now, here’s a tip: Invest in tools like KWFinder.

Step 2: Pick your platform
After you’ve picked out your niche, the next step is to choose a platform.
You’ve got two options:
- Explore social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok) or
- Build your own website
It all boils down to which one you’d be more comfortable in.
Do you love creating videos and social media content?
You might be better off with a platform on Instagram or Facebook as a digital content creator.
Just like Luisa Dunn, a pro-age model and an age-visibility advocate.
Dunn is an influencer in the fashion industry who has a specific target audience a.k.a niche.
She makes commissions partnering with brands all while promoting her expertise: Being an advocate for fashion for older women.
And it works.
Her followers love her for her great clothing and jewelry recommendations (and encouraging takes on life too).
But if your strengths lie in writing, consider building your own website for publishing articles.
For me, building a website is still the best choice.
In case you didn’t know, blogging is still the #1 platform for affiliate marketers in 2023.
Whoever said blogging is dead and social media is the new king clearly did not know what they were talking about.
Here are three stats to prove that creating a website will be worth it:
- Google is still the most popular search engine with over 80% of market share
- Latest data shows that Google sees more than 8.5 billion searches a day
- The global content marketing market size is expected to blow up to USD 584.02 billion by 2027
So I say we’re in a pretty good space here.
A well-optimized website with high-quality content has the potential to reach billions of searchers who use Google.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should only stick to writing articles.
You could definitely get creative and dabble on social media platforms.
But if you want the best results, build a website.
Building a website
We did say earlier that while you need zero capital for affiliate marketing, you do need to maintain a website.
And to build your professional website, you’ll have to pay for the domain and web hosting.

That’s a great bang-for-your-buck deal that will help kickstart your affiliate marketing dreams.
And all you have to do is skip a few visits to your local Starbucks and invest the money instead of building a platform where you can start a passive income job.
Blogging has been the bread and butter of affiliate marketers for a decade, and it’s still going super strong.
Blogging isn’t dead.
In fact, in my 11 years in the business, I can tell you confidently that it hasn’t been more alive.
Step 3: Find and join affiliate programs
Now we get to the fun part — choosing affiliate programs.
With the thousands of affiliate programs out there, it might get confusing.
But finding the right one is critical for the business you’re building.
Keep in mind that you shouldn’t only look for those with high-paying commissions, those will naturally come over time once you’ve settled yourself as an authority in your niche.
Instead, look for products and services that your audience will benefit from.
Here are a few things you should keep in mind when choosing an affiliate program:
Choose programs that fit your niche
Knowing your niche narrows down your search for great affiliate programs but here’s the catch:
There’s no “perfect affiliate program”.
We can classify programs under two types:
- Those that are high-volume, low-commission: An example of this would be Amazon Associates. It would take you hundreds of sales before you could earn the big bucks.
- Those that are low-volume, high-commission: E-commerce platform BigCommerce has one of the highest-paying affiliate programs out there. They offer a 200% commission for every successful referral. Enterprise clients can earn as much as $1,500.
You might sell a lot of products with Amazon Associates but one BigCommerce sale might blow that right out of the water.
However, that doesn’t mean you ditch the latter and keep working on the former.
You can promote both at the same time but be smart about it.
As a general rule of thumb:
- Go for low-payout, high volume (like Amazon Associates) if you’re marketing to consumers.
- Go for high-payout, low volume (like BigCommerce, Kinsta, etc.) if you’re marketing to businesses.
Choose affiliate programs with good commission rates
You wouldn’t want to waste your time and effort with affiliate programs that pay low, right?
Before you partner with a company, make sure the rates suit what you have in mind.
Hubspot says a good commission rate ranges from 5% to 25%, depending on the industry you’re working with.
To make sure you’re getting what you worked hard for, make sure your commissions fall between 10%-20%, if not higher.
Even if you’re a beginner, you should still aim high!
Choose programs with great market reputation
Avoid being associated with brands and companies that have a bad rep!
Make sure you do your own research to find out which brands and companies are reliable since your reputation is on the line.
And how on earth do you do that?
I’ll share a tip that has served me well all those years ago, even until today:
Fire up that search engine and simply type “your keyword + affiliate program.”
Make a short list of the first few ones that pop up and you can begin there.
For example, let’s say you want to take over the fashion industry, specifically the plus-size fashion niche.
Type “plus size fashion affiliate program” and here’s what you’re going to get:
Choose an affiliate network
Lastly, when you’re looking for the best affiliate program, Google isn’t the only place you can check.
You can also join an affiliate platform like Impact.com which puts affiliate programs into categories.
You could also consider being part of an affiliate network such as:
- Amazon Associates: For everything sold at Amazon
- ShareASale and CJ Affiliate: Thousands of merchants under one roof
- ClickBank: For digital products such as e-books, online courses, etc.
- PartnerStack: For B2B technologies
Remember: Before you sign up for an affiliate network, be sure to look into the product you’re about to recommend.
You wouldn’t want to promote something that doesn’t deliver and tarnish your good name, right?
Step 4: Create high-quality content
Back in the day, earning from affiliate marketing meant writing a thin article and slapping some links on it.
But now that everything can be found online and you’ve got tons of competition, creating quality content should be a top priority.
Zippia statistics reveal that there are at least 6 million blog posts published per day globally.
Back in 2022, WordPress saw 70 million new blog posts per month!
Add the fact that an average person only spends 37 seconds reading a blog post and you’ll realize how tight competition can get.
This means to stand out, you have to roll up your sleeves and create content that’s unique and will be valuable to your audience.
And you won’t only do this once.
You have to be consistent about it.
But what kind of content should you write?
Chris Hornak from Bloghands says that “quality blog content answers a question, solves a problem, entertains, or otherwise gives people the information they are satisfied with.”
“It is clear and accurate, easy to share or reference, and achieves a goal, whether that’s converting leads, driving traffic, or something else that fits in with your business objectives,” he wrote.
But let’s not forget that the ultimate goal of this quality content of yours is to promote affiliate products and earn a commission.
So how do you expertly weave in your affiliate links without appearing sleazy about it?
Here are a few quick tips:
Use affiliate banners
Using affiliate banners is a great way to make sure you catch your audience’s eye.
Only if it’s related to the post they’re reading.
How annoying is it to come across a banner advertising a pizza company while you’re reading an article for “8 Best Mouse Traps You Can DIY”?
As an affiliate marketer, read the room!
Offer related content so you get the clicks you need.
Try building a resource page
If you’re known for something, people will naturally want to find out every little thing that has led you to this success.
Imagine you’re a ripped fitness coach running a health and fitness blog.
Naturally, readers would want to know how you got those sculpted abs, your brand of protein powder, what energy drink you would recommend, and even down to the brand of socks you use every day.
You could write about it individually but you could also create a resource page where each tried and tested item you promote has its own affiliate link.
A resource page can list all of the products, programs, and services you love.
Smartblogger is a great example of this:
Write product reviews
As an affiliate marketer, your main goal is to help your audience make the right buying decisions.
And the best way to encourage a person to try something is to do it yourself first.
You can’t claim to be the authority for pet accessories if you don’t know where to get bang-for-your-buck cat litter or if you haven’t tested a single dog crate.
Before you can recommend a product, you have to make sure it will live up to your standards because frankly, your name is on the line.
There are three ways you can do this:
- Write a simple review: List the product’s pros and cons, features, price, and where to buy.
- Write product comparisons: Stack two products against each other and help your audience reach a buying decision easily.
- Write list posts: Create a quick list of products you recommend (e.g. 15 Best Fitness Affiliate Programs)
The New York Times’ Wirecutter website is a perfect example of all three ways above.
These guys have tested everything — from the best mattresses for sleep to the best men’s boxer briefs.
They create in-depth reviews about a product and sneak in affiliate links in ways that won’t make you scoff.

By now you should know that affiliate marketing is a side hustle that’s feasible enough for beginners.
But it does come with its own challenges.
For one, affiliates have to watch out for threats online such as fraud and misleading products.
They also have to watch out for mistakes they might be unintentionally committing.
Here are common mistakes affiliate marketers make that you should learn from:
- Poor quality content: Mediocre posts won’t fly in this day and age. Produce content that will add value to your reader and your post has a chance of standing out. Publish great content and reap the clicks.
- Selling instead of helping: Your priority should be building a relationship with your audience and sustaining that. Being greedy over commissions will only produce sloppy work and get you poor results.
- Hard selling: I know you want to promote products but the hard sell approach will turn off many. Focus on earning your audience’s trust first so they will naturally turn to you for recommendations.
